SSOM Fall meeting 2025 impressions
On November 18, 2025, the Swiss Society for Optics and Microscopy (SSOM) hosted its fall meeting at SITEM in Bern, drawing an engaged audience of 50 researchers, industry experts, and students. The event focused on volume electron microscopy (volume EM), a cutting-edge technique revolutionizing high-resolution 3D imaging of biological and material samples.

The day started with an exclusive one-hour tour, led by Dr. Simon Rothen CEO of SITEM-Insel, of the state-of-the-art facility of SITEM in Bern. Participants explored cutting-edge labs, advanced imaging suites, and collaborative research spaces, gaining firsthand insights into SITEM’s innovative approach to translational medicine and technology development.
In the afternoon, attendees explored the latest advancements in sample preparation, imaging workflows, and data analysis, with presentations highlighting how volume EM is enabling breakthroughs in neuroscience, cell biology, and materials science. Keynote speakers shared insights into overcoming technical challenges, such as large dataset handling and sample preparation, while fostering collaboration between academia and industry.
Networking opportunities further strengthened the community’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of microscopy. As volume EM continues to evolve, events like this play a crucial role in shaping its impact on research and innovation.
